Zenshindo
Citation: Dr. Harald Conrad is a German national, but is also fluent in English and Japanese. His wife, Josephina Kudo-Conrad, is a Japanese national with a Japanese-Filipino background. Both have collected Japanese art for almost 20 years. In 2011, they decided to share the fruits of their collecting passion by starting their gallery Zenshindō. Before taking up a position in Japanese Studies at the University of Sheffield in 2008, Harald spent more than 12 years studying and working in Japan. During this time, Harald and Josephina became friends with several well-known Japanese collectors and art dealers, including the late Atsumi Kuniyasu and the late Kobayashi Katsuhiro (Tenkisendō). Harald joined the antiquity study group (kobijutsu kenkyūkai) of these great Japanese connoisseurs and published subsequently a Japanese book on the seals of the Confucian calligrapher Kameda Bōsai (1752–1826). Since Bōsai’s calligraphies are one of our great passions, we named our gallery Zenshindō. This name refers to one of Bōsai’s most beautiful seals, which might be translated as ‘Hall of the Virtuous Mind’. For further information on Bōsai’s life and work, please refer to Stephen Addiss’ seminal book ‘The World of Kameda Bōsai: The Calligraphy, Poetry, Painting and Artistic Circle of a Japanese Literatus’ (for further details see our bibliography section). Striving to honour the name of our gallery, we do not offer any artworks that do not appeal to our own taste, regardless of the demands of the marketplace. Our particular focus is on calligraphies and paintings by Japanese Confucian scholars, Buddhist monks, and literati painters. We also store a limited number of ceramics and scholars’ objects.

The Morrison Collection : Home Page
Description: Between November 1996 and February 1998 Andrew C. West was employed by S.O.A.S. library on a one year contract to catalogue the Morrison Collection. This resulted in the publication of the Catalogue of the Morrison Collection of Chinese Books in 1998. The content of the catalogue and this site are not identical: "The site acts mainly as a supplement to the published catalogue, providing various (non-copyrighted) material that there was no room to include in the catalogue. It also includes catalogue records for Morrison books that have been uncovered since the publication of the catalogue" [information by A.C. West]. Next to the various catalogues this site also contains a short biography of Robert Morrison and an introduction to the collection.

Lingua Mongolia
Citation: The aim of this website is to further promote the study of the Mongolian language, and the rich literary history of this otherwise neglected part of Asia. It is hoped that this website will act as a focal point for the development of new talent in the study and translation of Mongolian literature in the new millennium. Unlike other Asian languages, the student of Mongolian is faced with a daunting and unrewarding task, resources are scarce and difficult to locate, and the only grammars of the literary language are all out of print. Even with the advent of the Internet and the information age, the level of online coverage for this important Asian language remains unacceptably low. To this end, Lingua Mongolia aims to provide students and researchers with free unhindered access to first-rate language resources, in the form of digitised books, processed texts and an online dictionary. It is my sincere hope that this site will provide for the needs of Mongolists at all levels, from those taking their first tentative steps into the study of this beautiful language, to those who have already beaten a path to the gates of Kharakhorum.

America, Asia and the Pacific : The Edward Sylvester Morse Collection from the Phillips Library at the Peabody Essex Museum, Salem
Citation: Edward S Morse (1838-1925) was a great polymath – notable for his work in natural history, ethnography and art history – but, perhaps most famous for his work in bringing Japan and the West closer together.

He was one of the first Americans to live in Japan – teaching science at the Imperial University of Tokyo – and he devoted much of his life to the task of documenting life in Japan before it was transformed by Western modernization. In addition to preserving the household records of a samurai family and many accounts of the tea ceremony, Morse made notes on subjects as diverse as shop signs, fireworks, hairpins, agricultural tools, artists’ studios, music, games, printing, carpentry, the Ainu, gardens, household construction, art and architecture.

An accomplished draughtsman, his pencil and ink drawings, enliven his diaries and correspondence and make his papers a pleasure to read. The papers include:

His original Japan diaries, which run to over 3,000 pages and contain over 1,300 sketches

Journals of visits to England, France and Germany in the 1880s showing the interest of Europeans in gaining authentic insights into ordinary life in Japan and China.

Correspondence including exchanges with Alexander and Louis Agassiz, William Sturgis Bigelow, Charles Darwin, Ernest Fenollosa, Yukichi Fukuzawa, Isabella Stewart Gardner, John M Gould, Oliver Wendell Holmes, Ernest Ingersoll, Hiroyuki Kato, Percival Lowell, The Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, Charles Eliot Norton, Frederick Putnam, Hideo Takamine, Seiichi Tejima, Charles Townsend, Charles Weld and Yu Kil-chun.

Scrapbooks with a wealth of rare and ephemeral material on a myriad of subjects.

Records of his publications and lectures revealing his interests in archaeology, art, astronomy, ethnology, religion and zoology, as well as his desire to encourage an American audience to appreciate Asian society and culture.

Morse was one of the earliest and most important mediators between American and Asian societies. It is fitting that his papers should now enable scholars to explore these links.
