http://cufts2.lib.sfu.ca/CRDB/BVAS/resource/11059 more Language: chi Chinese Chinatown news
Citation: The Chinatown News was an English-language biweekly magazine founded by Roy Mah and published by the Chinese Publicity Bureau in Vancouver, British Columbia. Roy Mah was an active member of many Chinese-Canadian organizations, including the Chinese Veterans, and was a proud first generation Canadian. Roy Mah started an earlier bilingual tabloid called the New Citizen, which ran from 1948 to 1952, and led to the creation of the Chinatown News. The first issue of the Chinatown News was published in 1953 under the name Chinatown; the name changed to Chinatown News in 1956. The last official issue of the Chinatown News appears to be v.43:no.12 (misnumbered as v.43:no.11), which was published in June 1996. On April 8, 2007, a special “souvenir edition” of the Chinatown News was released for the occasion of Roy Mah’s 89th birthday (numbered v.89:no.1). The Chinatown News represented the interests of the English-speaking Chinese-Canadians in Vancouver, but had an international scope and was inclusive of all people of Chinese heritage. The publication was constant in its effort to construct a distinct Chinese-Canadian identity and was a principal instrument of reclaiming a culture for Chinese-Canadians. Digitized issues of this publication include issues of Chinatown and Chinatown News. Chinatown includes issues: v.1:no.7 (Dec. 3, 1953), v.1:no.23 (Aug. 18, 1954), v.2:no.3 (Oct. 3, 1954), v.2:no.6 (Nov.18, 1954), v.2:no.7 (Dec. 3, 1954), and v.2:no.11 (Mar. 3, 1955). The digitized run of the Chinatown News includes issues from v.6:no.7 (Dec. 3, 1958) to v.13:no.23 (August 18, 1966), inclusive.

Citation: Chinese-language documents focusing on the history of the Chinese Consolidated Benevolent Association (CCBA). A collection of 55 Chinese-language documents focusing on the history of the Chinese Consolidated Benevolent Association (CCBA). Founded in 1884, the Chinese Consolidated Benevolent Association (CCBA) was a crucial force in Victoria's immigrant history. The oldest Association of its kind in North America, the CCBA advocated for an inclusive society, and for individual and group rights for people of Chinese origin. The era covered by the documents in this collection (1884 to 1922) was a difficult one for Chinese immigrants, when the completion of the Trans-Canada Railroad in 1885 threw thousands out of work. Documents included in this collection delineate the history of the association, recount its protests against discrimination, and record the history of institutions such as Victoria's Chinese Hospital.
http://content.lib.sfu.ca/cdm/search/collection/cba more Language: chi Chinese Chinese Express
Citation: Although it developed later than the British Columbia community, Chinese immigration to Ontario was already a significant force in the 1950s. After changes to immigration policy in 1967 opened the doors to skilled workers, large Chinese communities began to form in Toronto and Ottawa, as well other large Canadian cities. As a result, the size and internal diversity of Ontario’s Chinese communities increased dramatically in the 1970s and 80s. This increased presence led to community activism around issues such as education, language maintenance, and city development, as well as the formation of the Chinese Canadian National Council for Equality, based in Toronto. The Chinese Express served this wave of immigrants, publishing daily from 1971 to 1989, entirely in Chinese. It served as a source of general news, covering world events and Canadian politics, as well as that of specific interest to the Chinese community. Its entire run has been digitized and will be available here.
