Citation: The Chinese Section was formed in 1993 [...]. The BA major in Chinese has been available since 1996, and in 1997 additional papers for native speakers of Chinese are available. The Chinese Section caters for both native and non-native speakers. The staff consists of two lecturers and one assistant lecturer, all of whom are native speakers. As part of the section's philosophy, language papers are taught in combination with cultural themes.

The Institute is currently managed by a Director working with a Council and an Executive Committee. The Asian Studies Institute began work in October 1997 with the appointment of its first Director, and followed upon the work of an earlier Board of Asian Studies, which was largely responsible for turning the idea of an Institute into reality.
