写真の中の明治・大正 = The Meiji and Taisho eras in photographs
Citation: With the modernization after the Meiji era, with natural disasters and war damage, postwar reconstruction and natural land redevelopment, Japanese scenery has changed dramatically. In many areas the things of the past have left no trace and now you can find no reminder of the period. However, materials from the Meiji and Taisho eras possessed in the National Diet Library contain a wealth of photographs both of sights already lost and of buildings that are still familiar to us.
In this digital exhibition, photographs selected from these materials are introduced as "The Meiji and Taisho Eras in Photographs."
First the scenery of Tokyo is picked up. About 500 photographs of famous buildings and sights have been selected from photo books mainly issued in the Meiji era. For your convenience, a search can be done by area names and keywords, and the descriptions have been linked to relevant materials of the Digital Library from the Meiji Era and the Rare Books Image Database. In addition, columns have been prepared for some subjects so that you can learn more about their background and history.

Citation: The contents of this guide consist of Reference Tools for searching for statistical data, Long-term Statistics, Comprehensive Statistics exhaustively covering all areas, Summarized Statistics in Selected Areas limited to certain categories, and a wide variety of Primary Statistical Data. While Reference Tools and Long-term Statistics are each included in an independent chapter, Comprehensive Statistics and Summarized Statistics in Selected Areas are divided into English versions and bilingual versions, where the original Japanese can be referred to. Citation: Scenic Mementos of Japan Since early times, people have preserved images of memorable scenes, which reflect the culture and mode of life of their age, in various ways. We can see the people's life of each period in paintings, illustrations, woodblock prints and photographs. In this electronic exhibition, images of scenes from the 17th to the beginning of the 20th century Japan are digitized and linked together by region, period, and selected topics. It will be enable you to retrace the memories of Japanese scenes. Vienna International Exposition The Vienna International Exposition, held in the capital of Austria in 1873, was the first international exposition in which the Japanese government officially participated. Japan set up a pavilion and put out information on its industry and culture into the world. The exposition, which was important for Japan in starting international exchanges, is re-created here by digital technology. It is introduced in three parts: virtual tour of the exposition, Japan and the Vienna International Exposition, and information on related resources. Modern Japanese Political History Materials The Modern Japanese Political History Materials Room of the National Diet Library holds documents, such as diaries, letters, and business papers, once owned by politicians in and after the latter half of the 19th century. Important items selected from these materials are electronically exhibited here, classified by period or theme.
