China : Trade, Politics and Culture, 1793-1980
Citation: This project answers the need for clear, intelligible and informative English-language sources relating to China and the West, 1793-1980, which can be used in the classroom or in course packs.

It is also ideal for independent projects on almost any aspect of Chinese history during the two centuries of monumental social and political upheaval that ultimately recreated China into a modern power. It comprises:

A large body of maps, colour paintings, photographs and drawings depicting people, places, customs and events that will enliven any study of China.

Substantial papers of key individuals involved in the Chinese Maritime Customs service from ECM and CAV Bowra to Robert Hart and Frederick Maze.

Records of major diplomatic missions to China ranging from the late 18th and early 19th century missions of Macartney and Amherst to those of Nixon and Heath in the 20th century.

Papers of missionaries active in all regions of China from Canton and Macao to Shanghai and Peking.

Extensive, fully searchable run of the Chinese Recorder and Missionary Journal (1867-1941) and North China Mission resp and North China Shantung Mission quarterly paper (1893-1936)

Recently opened files from the National Archives at Kew relating to the thawing of relations with China in the 1970s.

America, Asia and the Pacific : The Edward Sylvester Morse Collection from the Phillips Library at the Peabody Essex Museum, Salem
Citation: Edward S Morse (1838-1925) was a great polymath – notable for his work in natural history, ethnography and art history – but, perhaps most famous for his work in bringing Japan and the West closer together.

He was one of the first Americans to live in Japan – teaching science at the Imperial University of Tokyo – and he devoted much of his life to the task of documenting life in Japan before it was transformed by Western modernization. In addition to preserving the household records of a samurai family and many accounts of the tea ceremony, Morse made notes on subjects as diverse as shop signs, fireworks, hairpins, agricultural tools, artists’ studios, music, games, printing, carpentry, the Ainu, gardens, household construction, art and architecture.

An accomplished draughtsman, his pencil and ink drawings, enliven his diaries and correspondence and make his papers a pleasure to read. The papers include:

His original Japan diaries, which run to over 3,000 pages and contain over 1,300 sketches

Journals of visits to England, France and Germany in the 1880s showing the interest of Europeans in gaining authentic insights into ordinary life in Japan and China.

Correspondence including exchanges with Alexander and Louis Agassiz, William Sturgis Bigelow, Charles Darwin, Ernest Fenollosa, Yukichi Fukuzawa, Isabella Stewart Gardner, John M Gould, Oliver Wendell Holmes, Ernest Ingersoll, Hiroyuki Kato, Percival Lowell, The Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, Charles Eliot Norton, Frederick Putnam, Hideo Takamine, Seiichi Tejima, Charles Townsend, Charles Weld and Yu Kil-chun.

Scrapbooks with a wealth of rare and ephemeral material on a myriad of subjects.

Records of his publications and lectures revealing his interests in archaeology, art, astronomy, ethnology, religion and zoology, as well as his desire to encourage an American audience to appreciate Asian society and culture.

Morse was one of the earliest and most important mediators between American and Asian societies. It is fitting that his papers should now enable scholars to explore these links.

Grand Secretariat Archives = 內閣大庫檔案
Description: While the metadata of the database are also searchable freely on the web (http://archive.ihp.sinica.edu.tw/mctkm2/index.html), the subscribed version gives access to actually view and read all the documents. A special viewer is needed so CrossAsia provides access via a Citrix-connection where the viewer is already installed. To enter the subscribed version of the database please click "授權使用" and enter one of the login and passwords given at the entry page. You also have to enter the random number shown in blue. The database allows simple and advanced searches. In the latter you may also select the document's language. Hits lists can be filtered by time, type of document, issuing authority, issuing person and document language. Clicking a sequence number in your hit list will open the detailed view of the documents metadata, by clicking the document icon of these metadata a file is downloaded and shown in the database viewer. To return to the metadata close the viewer by clicking "結束離開"; to further return to the hit list click "回簡目顯示" in the upper left corner of the screen. The metadata of a document may also contain where and in what printed collection of archive materials the respective document is reproduced (mostly in facsimile). However, the reproduction in the database is made from the original, not the printed facsimile. The following collections are referenced by the database: 《明清檔案》 《明清史料》 《清代官書記臺灣鄭氏亡事》 《內閣大庫書檔舊目》 《清代法制研究》 《明清檔案存真選輯》 A selection of example documents are presented in an online exhibition of the Academia sinica (Archives of the Grand Secretariat); explanations of the different genres of documents and other background information are provided by the Grand Secretariats Archive Project, that also provided the metadata of the database: Grand Secretariat Archive Project). A sister project of the National Palace Museum in Tabei is the 《清代宮中檔奏摺及軍機處檔摺件》. イーハトーブ岩手 電子図書館
Citation: Since its opening, the library has gone to great lengths to collect materials of Kenji Miyazawa and Takuboku Ishikawa, ranging from their own originals works through to biographies and research thesis’s about these two great writers and products of Iwate Prefecture. Their works are the defining features of the library, and the various materials contained within ‘The Takuboku Collection’ and ‘Kenji Collection’ are in great demand. Moreover, the library periodically holds ‘Kenji Article Exhibitions’ and ‘Takuboku Article Exhibitions’ to display these collections. The Kenji Collection includes a variety of his precious works such as the fairytale‘Chumon no Ooi Ryoriten’, the first publication of his book of poems published before his death,‘Haru to Shura’, and the ‘Kokuyaku Myoho Rengekyo’which his father published 1000 copies and distributed to Kenji’s friends as requested in Kenji’s will. The research of Koyo Yoshida, first researcher of Takuboku Ishikawa, forms the base of the Takuboku collection. Starting with Takuboku’s book of poems ‘Akogare’, and his verses ‘Ichiaku no suna’ and ‘Kanashiki gangu’ published before his death, this collection also includes the magazines ‘Shotenchi’ and ‘Subaru’ that Takubuku himself was involved in publishing.,
