Shamanism in China : bibliography
Citation: The first problem that one encounters in studying shamanism is one of definition and terminology, since this largely determines the inclusion or exclusion of literature and topics. I prefer to take a broad approach, that includes the self-flagellating tang-ki of Southern China, possession cults (in which a being descends into a person, speaking through his or her mouth or by means of a writing apparatus) and spirit travel cults.

Citation: While the printed Minjian zongjiao bibliographies are merely arranged alphabetically by authors, in the on-line version I group entries by their subject matter so as to make it easier for the reader to track down publications on specific topics. The subject categories are adapted from Laurence G. Thompson's Chinese Religions bibliographies, which are the best bibliographic resource for publications on Chinese popular religion up to 1995
