America, Asia and the Pacific : The Edward Sylvester Morse Collection from the Phillips Library at the Peabody Essex Museum, SalemCitation:
Edward S Morse (1838-1925) was a great polymath – notable for his work in natural history, ethnography and art history – but, perhaps most famous for his work in bringing Japan and the West closer together.
He was one of the first Americans to live in Japan – teaching science at the Imperial University of Tokyo – and he devoted much of his life to the task of documenting life in Japan before it was transformed by Western modernization. In addition to preserving the household records of a samurai family and many accounts of the tea ceremony, Morse made notes on subjects as diverse as shop signs, fireworks, hairpins, agricultural tools, artists’ studios, music, games, printing, carpentry, the Ainu, gardens, household construction, art and architecture.
An accomplished draughtsman, his pencil and ink drawings, enliven his diaries and correspondence and make his papers a pleasure to read. The papers include:
His original Japan diaries, which run to over 3,000 pages and contain over 1,300 sketches
Journals of visits to England, France and Germany in the 1880s showing the interest of Europeans in gaining authentic insights into ordinary life in Japan and China.
Correspondence including exchanges with Alexander and Louis Agassiz, William Sturgis Bigelow, Charles Darwin, Ernest Fenollosa, Yukichi Fukuzawa, Isabella Stewart Gardner, John M Gould, Oliver Wendell Holmes, Ernest Ingersoll, Hiroyuki Kato, Percival Lowell, The Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, Charles Eliot Norton, Frederick Putnam, Hideo Takamine, Seiichi Tejima, Charles Townsend, Charles Weld and Yu Kil-chun.
Scrapbooks with a wealth of rare and ephemeral material on a myriad of subjects.
Records of his publications and lectures revealing his interests in archaeology, art, astronomy, ethnology, religion and zoology, as well as his desire to encourage an American audience to appreciate Asian society and culture.
Morse was one of the earliest and most important mediators between American and Asian societies. It is fitting that his papers should now enable scholars to explore these links.

WiseSearch = 慧科資訊Description:
The resource gives access to hundreds of newspapers, magazines, government and company informations etc. from Taiwan, Mainland China, Hongkong and Macao and some "other countries".
Via WiseSearch users may search by combined keywords, confine their searches to a specific time range (the maximum time range is 5 years), to headlines or full text as well as to specific sources resp. publication titles selectable under "Search Options" in the lower half of the screen. There also a short "info" of each resource can be found. By double clicking a publication title you may also exclude
Hit lists can be further "refined" and/or "filtered by source".
Full texts can be viewed online, downloaded or printed and you may first collect them in a TempFolder and then download the whole package to your local computer.
The current CrossAsia subscription starts with the year 1998 and does not include the image and video package.
A detailed English userguide
is provided via the menue of the WiseSearch web page.
WiseSearch does not allow to view a specific issue of a resource page by page or article by article. You may confine your search to a specific newspaper under "Search options" (for example by chosing "Mainland China > Newspaper > China Daily") and then to a specific year or month. But you still have to enter a keyword and thus may miss an article (search for "and" or "和" by adding quotation marks). Supposing a search for "and" is actually complete, the references of the hits give the publication date (not the number of the issue!) and in most cases also name the column where the article appeared. They do not name the page number.
A click on the resource title in a hit list or an article reference selects all articles of the respective resource but only those of the most recent month.
WiseSearch is mainly meant to provide you with an up to date newsstand of hundreds of Greater Chinas information resources.http://www.wisers.com/ more Language: chi Chinese, eng English
