Digital Research Library : University of PittsburghDescription:
Although limited to 36 titles, this digitizing project can serve as an exemplary model in terms of metadata, image quality, and project documentation. The available texts "about Modern China published in the first half of the twentieth century" are listed on a single "Texts" page, each linking to an information page with a detailed bibliographic description and a table of contents. Each item of this table is linked to the corresponding page image of the text. The main shortcoming of the whole project is that all texts are available as images only, there is no fulltext. Texts are displayed within an embedded application called "Pageviewer", that allows to view the page as image (small, normal, or large) or as pdf-file (requiring Adobe Acrobat plugin). One can also jump to a specific page; an overview list of all text-pages (numbers or thumbnails) is not available. It is recommended to view the files as pdf because that allows for easy zooming in/out the page. Unfortunately, this is not the default option, but once set to "view page as pdf" it will not change within the current text. There is no "full screen" option; to display a full page on the screen one has to zoom out in pdf mode, or to print the page. The "About" section offers insight into the concepts and process of digitization, a section explaining why each individual text was chosen for digitization is missing.http://digital.library.pitt.edu/ more Language: eng English

Gallica : la bibliothèque numériqueDescription:
The digital library of the National Library of France contains a number of rare and valuable items pertaining to China. Searching for auteur (author) "Kircher" or "Trigault" will bring up illustrations from their "China monumentis qua sacris qua profanis ..." and "De Christiana expeditione apud Sinas ..." respectively, and searching for sujet (subject) "chine" will lead to books by Du Halde, Le Comte and many others. Books come as PDF files, while illustrative works ("documents iconographiques") are presented as JPEGs. Unfortunately these illustrations can't be resized and are too small to be decipherable.http://gallica.bnf.fr/ more Language: fre French
中国年鉴资源全文数据库 = Apabi yearbooksDescription:
Access to the collection of 141 subscribed Apabi yearbooks. The yearbooks mostly come from the subject class 国情地情综合 (General situation of the Land and the Nation) or from economy related fields. The yearbook series only cover the years up to 2010. For newer yearbooks please refer to the CNKI yearbooks and statistial yearbooks databases.
The database platform offers fulltext search and subject browsing and, as advanced search, the possibility to confine ones search for example to "statistical data" or "pictures". When clicking a thumbnail image from the hitlist, the yearbook title opens with bibliographical data and a table of content for navigation, which opens only the respective part of the volume. This view allows right-mouse-clicks for saving the image and the option for printing the page. For some tables a link to a html-version of the page is offered beneath the image. As for the other books in the new Apabi platform a 翻阅原书 option is offered. This opens the book in a special viewer, which allows to see and page through the book as whole, use an embedded OCR and search the book. No printing or downloading option is offered.
The Apabi yearbook titles are also searchable via the EAD online catalogue (crossasia.stabikat.de).
The Yearbook database is now integrated into the Apabi Digital Library platform. To access the "old" (but already web-based) version of the ressource follow this LINK

Western Books on China Citation:
This new online collection comprises a descriptive, annotated bibliography of 654 early Western books on Imperial China up to 1850, all to be found in the Library of the School of Oriental and African Studies, London. The collection is based on the book Western Books on China published up to 1850 by John Lust.
The material is of unique historical interest, containing scrutiny of China by Western societies. The material contains an abundance of observations. The books, in a variety of Western languages, testify to the formidable difficulties encountered by Westerners, who attempted to extend their own familiar historical, linguistic and religious perceptions to the Chinese context.

China Yearbooks Full-text Database (CNKI) = 中国年鉴网络出版总库Description:
By 7.2012 the database contained 2415 yearbook titles in altogether 18579 volumes. The included information partly goes back to as early as 1912 (appearing in yearbooks that were published much later!) and also the most recently published yearbooks are included.
The platform allows browsing of yearbooks by industry, region or subject as well as an elaborate interface for searches within all bibliographical and subject fields and also the full text. Searches may be confined to "pictures" but not all picture captions, especially of older yearbooks, do have full text.
No option for paging through a whole book is provided. The different sections of a yearbook can only be viewed and downloaded separately. Download format is PDF.
The yearbooks database is already partly integrated into the larger CNKI "Knowledge Resource Integrated Database", which means, that for an yearbook item the system tries to find similar items within the Chinese Academic Journal, Master theses etc. databases etc. The yearbook database is currently not included into the metasearch of CNKI (metasearch of CNKI
