http://www.bacsuk.org.uk (British Association for Chinese Studies, London, UK) Citation: The British Association for Chinese Studies is a non-political organisation which has a membership of well over 200 individuals whose interests relate to greater China, drawn mainly from the academic community but also from industry, the media and government. We maintain a comprehensive listing of opportunities to study Chinese at university level in the UK. BACS plays an important role in liaising and consulting with other Area Studies organisations, with funding bodies, with China-related representative offices and with government departments. BACS has played a vital role in promoting the interests and priorities of the China-field in such recent government initiatives as the Research Assessment Exercise, the Teaching Quality Assessment and the HEFCE China Studies Review. The BACS School Liaison Officer encourages and promotes the study of China in schools and colleges. A member of the Chinese Language Teachers Seminar represents the interests of teachers of Chinese at university level. Postgraduate members of BACS run the China Postgraduate Network (CPN), which provides an organisational framework for all postgraduates whose research concerns China, and aims principally to disseminate information, offer advice, maintain a database of postgraduates in Britain, and pursue links with similar organisations in other countries. The CPN produces an annual Newsletter, which complements the yearly Bulletin published by BACS. Members and non-members are free to join the BACS email network/mailing list. BACS also administers scholarships for language study and research in Taiwan on behalf of the Taipei Representative Office in the UK and organises an Annual Conference to coincide with its Annual General Meeting each year. Every three years or so, this is held in cooperation with the British Associations of Japanese (BAJS) and Korean Studies (BAKS); the joint conferences promoting integration and cooperation within these area studies.
