http://www.pucsp.br/rever/rv2_2008/i_gonzaga.pdf (Elisabeth Gonzaga) Description: The article, O Locus Religioso como Indício da Opção pela “Identidade Imigrante” em Grupos Budistas da Jôdo Shinshu em Suzano, by Elisabeth Gonzaga and Rodrigo Wolff Apolloni appeared in the journal, Revista de Estudos da Religião: Religiões entre o Brasil e o Japão, edited by Rafael Shoji, June 2008, 86-102. Citation: The centenary of Japanese immigration to Brazil calls attention to multiple aspects of Japanese presence among us. One of these aspects is that of the survival, encapsulation, or decline of "Immigrantion Buddhism", deeply connected to the earliest generations of Japanese-Brazilians. In this article, we analyze the temples and religious iconography of an important Immigration Buddhism group (Jôdo Shinshu) in the city of Suzano, São Paulo. The study concludes that among these communities (comprised essentially of the immigrants themselves and their elder sons), religion assumes a strong commitment with an "ethnic” identity based on the preservation of traditional values, preventing an effective expansion into society at large.
