The first part of this essay is meant to introduce Dr. Liu and his collection to scholars of Chinese music. In its second part I will also try to outline some of the ideas Dr. Liu has formed during his years of collecting and research in the field of Chinese music. The article is based on an interview with C.C. Liu in 1991 and seems to have been written in 1992 or 1993.
