DE: Er kam 1881 im Auftrag der Hong Kong and Shanghai Banking Corporation nach Japan und wurde zuerst in der Filiale in Yokohama # 62 eingesetzt. Ab 1884 wurde er in die Filiale in Kobe versetzt.
In Kobe lernte er Minnie Hellyer, Tochter von Frederick Hellyer, kennen und am 23.05.1887 heirateten sie in der Union Protestabt Church in Kobe. Im Jahr 1891 haben sie Japan verlassen.

Von 1880 bis 1882 lehrte sie in Yokohama und von 1882 bis 1883 in Tokyo am methodistischen Missionsseminar (Aoyama Gakuin).Vom 1. September 1882 bis zum 31. März 1888 war sie bei der japanischen Regierung, Bildungsministerium, als Lehrer an der Tokyo Eiwa Gakkō Boys School angestellt. As a member of the American Methodist Episcopal Church she was sent to Japan as a missionary through the Missionary Society and arrived on May 25, 1880. In Japan she taught English, German, French, elocution, music, and Bible history at the Aoyama Gakuin on both the secondary and college levels and at times in the theology department. From 1880 to 1882 she taught in Yokohama and from 1882 to 1883 in Tokyo at the Methodist Mission Seminary (Aoyama Gakuin). From September 1, 1882 until March 31, 1888 she was employed by the Japanese government, Ministry of Education, as an English teacher at the Tokyo Eiwa Gakkō Boys School. In spite of the reaction of the Japanese against women teachers in the boys schools in the 1890's she was highly enough regarded to be kept in the school until 1941 and served on its board of trustees.
She was one of the first women in Tokyo to use the bicycle as a means of transportation making the tenmile round trip every Sunday to Kudan Church where she played the organ and conducted very popular Bible classes for young men and women.
On March 24, 1916 she married in Tokyo Charles Bishop.
Even after official retirement she continued to live on the school campus until forced by the political situation to return to the US in 1941 and departed on June 21, 1941. Her brother, Milton Smith Vail, was also a Methodist missionary in Japan, as was her husband.

Im Oktober 1879 wurde das methodistische Missionsseminar (Aoyama Gakuin) in Yokohama eröffnet und der Missionsrat ernannte Milton S. Vail zum Leiter. Er hat hier bis 1883 gewirkt.
Vom 01.09.1882 bis zum 31.03.1888 war er von der japanischen Regierung, Ministerium für Bildung, als Englisch-Lehrer an der Tokyo Eiwa Gakkō, Schule für Knaben, angestellt.
Während dieser Zeit heiratete er am 01.01.1885 Emma Catherine Witbeck, Direktor der Ferris Academy. Vor ihrer Ehe war sie Missionarin der Reformed Church of Amerika in Japan.
Nach ihrer Heirat lebten und arbeiteten sie zusammen. Sie hatten vier Kinder:

Im Jahr 1894 hatten sie Urlaub in den USA, aber sie kamen 1895 zurück nach Japan und er begann seinen neuen Posten in Nagasaki an der Chinzei Gakuin.
In Japan betreute er die Übersetzungen der Arbeiten von J. C. Geikies „Das Leben Christi“ und Sheldons „Geschichte der Lehre Gottes“ ins Japanische.
Wegen Krankheit beendete er seine Amtszeit in Nagasaki und sie verließen für immer Japan am 24. Februar 1900.
Nach Rückkehr nach Amerika wurde er von 1903 bis 1925 Direktor der anglo-japanischen Schule in San Francisco, die von der Methodist Episcopal Church, Pacific Mission, für japanische Einwanderer betrieben wurde; 1926 ging er in den Ruhestand.
Milton Vail starb in Berkeley, CA, am 19. September 1928. Emma C. Vail starb am 27. Juli 1945; sie sind beide in Oakland, CA, beerdigt.

Seine Schwester, Jennie Stevenson Vail, war auch in Japan als Missionar der Methodist Episcopal Church.

During this period he married on January 1, 1885 Emma Catherine Witbeck, the principal of Ferris Academy. She was a Reformed Church of America missionary to Japan before their marriage.
After their marriage they lived and worked together. They had four children:

In 1894 they stayed in the USA on holidays but they came back to Japan in 1895 and he started for his new post in Nagasaki at the Chinzei Gakuin.
In Japan he supervised the translations of J. C. Geikie’s “Life of Christ” and Sheldon’s “History of Doctrine into Japanese.

Due to ill health, he ceased his tenure in Nagasaki and they left Japan for good on February 24, 1900.
After returning to America he became principal of the Anglo-Japanese School in San Francisco from 1903 to 1925 which was operated by the Methodist Episcopal Church, Pacific Mission, for Japanese immigrants; in 1926 he retired.

Milton Vail died in Berkeley, CA, on September 19, 1928. Emma C. Vail died on July 27, 1945; they are both interred in Oakland, CA.

His sister, Jennie Stevenson Vail, was a Methodist Episcopal Church missionary in Japan, too.

Diese Firmengründung schien sehr unvorbereitet gewesen zu sein, denn bereits im Jahr 1898 existierten beide Niederlassungen nicht mehr. A. Valentinis ist 1898 als Resident in Yokohama # 76 registriert. Als Agent für die Italian Commercial Agency wurde W. H. Gill & Co., Kobe, eingesetzt. Im folgenden Jahr hat Augusto Valentinis Japan verlassen.

Er wurde Mitglied des Landtags im Jahre 1852 und wieder 1857 und 1858.Er nahm am Bürgerkrieg als Oberst teil und wurde 1861 Mitglied des Parlaments und er hatte dieses Amt bis 1865. Er wurde als Amerikanischer Außerordentlicher Gesandter und Ministerbevollmächtigter der US-Gesandtschaft von Tokyo am 18. Januar 1866 berufen und traf im August in Yokohama an 1866 ein. Er hielt das Amt bis zum 11. November 1869. Nachdem er in die USA zurückgekehrt war, lebte er in Florida und spielte eine aktive Rolle von 1874 bis 1888 als Richter am Staatsgerichtshof. Er starb am 01.08.1888.

EN: He studied law at Franklin Academy, was admitted to the bar and commenced practice in Bath, N.Y. He became a member of the State assembly in 1852 and again in 1857 and 1858. He participated in the Civil War as a Colonel and became a Member of Parliament in 1861, holding this office until 1865. He was appointed American Envoy Extraordinary and Minister Plenipotentiary in the US Legation of Tokyo on January 18, 1866 and arrived in Yokohama in August 1866. He held the office until November 11, 1869. After he returned to the USA he lived in Florida and played an active part as Judge State Court of Appeals from 1874 to 1888. He died on August 1, 1888.

In diesem Jahr wurde die Firma Valmale & Co. in Yokohama # 100 gegründet und Henri Frederic Schoene begann in dieser Firma zu arbeiten. Er avancierte bald zum Partner und zusammen mit Adolf Milsom entstand 1869 die neue Firma Valmale, Schoene & Milsom, Yokohama # 32. Schwerpunkt ihres Geschäftes war Rohseide. Die Firma entwickelte sich rasch und der Firmensitz wurde ab 1869 nach Yokohama # 177 dauerhaft verlegt. Charles Valmale starb 1875. Nach seinem Tod wurde die Firma abgewickelt, Nachfolger wurde 1878 die Firma "Schoene & Milsom", die jedoch Ende 1880 ebenfalls wieder aufgelöst wurde, da Adolf Milsom als Seideninspektor nach Shanghai ging. Als Liquidator für Schoene & Milsom fungierte Fritz Schoene. Er rief ein Jahr darauf mit seinem Genfer Landsmann A. Mottu die neue Firma Schoene & Mottu ins Leben.

EN: On February 6, 1864, a Treaty of Amity and Commerce between Japan and Switzerland was signed in Tokyo. This also enabled Swiss citizens to have the unrestricted freedom of trade and to purchase property in the treaty ports opened for foreigners.
Thus, also Charles Valmale came to Japan in 1864 and he settled as a merchant in Yokohama. Right from the start J. B. Cazet became his employee, but in 1867 he left the company again. In this year, the firm Valmale & Co. was founded in Yokohama # 100 and Henri Frederic Schoene began to work in this company. DE: Paul Louis Vautier war der Sohn des schweizer Genre-Malers Marc Louis Benjamin Vautier (1829-1898), ein Vertreter der Düsseldorfer Schule.
Er war ab 1888 in Japan bei der Firma C. Illies & Co. in Yokohama # 54 angestellt.

Paul Louis Vautier war nicht nur Kaufmann, sondern auch Kunstsammler und Numismatiker.
Die praktische Einführung in die verschiedenen Schulen und Techniken japanischer Schwertzierate erhielt Alexander Georg Mosle in Tokyo von Paul Vautier, der ihm dieses Kunstgebiet anhand seiner eigenen Sammlung nahe brachte, die damals eine der bedeutendsten ihrer Art war. Der Kunsthistoriker Otto Kümmel beurteilte später diese Sammlung, dass sie die Kunst des Schwertschmucks fast "wissenschaftlich vollständig" zeigt.
Diese Sammlung von etwa 1800 Schwertzieraten wurde um 1910 Georg OEDER, ebenfalls Maler der Düsseldorfer Malerschule, übernommen, der auch japanische Kunst sammelte.
Paul Louis Vautier starb bereits 1930, seine Frau starb erst am 03.01.1963.

Paul Louis Vautier was not only a merchant, but also an art collector and numismatist.
The practical introduction to the different schools and techniques of Japanese sword ornamentation was given by Paul Vautier to Alexander Georg Mosle in Tokyo, who brought this art field to his attention with the pieces of his own collection, which was then one of the most important of its kind. The art historian Otto Kümmel later stated about this collection, that the art of sword decoration was almost of "scientific completeness".
This collection of about 1800 sword ornamentation was taken around 1910 by Georg OEDER, also painter of the Dusseldorf painter's school, who collected Japanese art, too.

Paul Louis Vautier died already in 1930, his wife only died on January 3, 1963.

DE: Aufgrund des Einflusses des französischen Gesandten Leon Roches wurde der erst 27 Jahre alte Léonce Verny 1865 gefragt, in Japan eine völlig neue Werft auf der Basis neuester westlicher Technologien zu errichten und Verny stimmte dem zu.
In seinen elf Jahren in Yokosuka schuf er viele wesentliche Grundlagen, wodurch Japan bald eine bedeutende Seemacht wurde.
Verny hatte das Lycée Impérial in Lyon und ab 1856 die renommierte École Polytechnique in Paris besucht und wählte als Hauptfach Marinetechnik.
Zwischen 1858 bis 1860 wurde er auf der École d'application du génie maritime im Eisen-Schiffbau, im Sägewerk und in der Tischlerei, an Dampfmaschinen, in der Eisenbearbeitung und Schiffsreparatur ausgebildet.

Nach Tätigkeit im Marinearsenal in Brest wurde er von 1861 bis 1864 zur "Division navale des mers de Chine et du Japon" entsandt, um in Ningpo und Schanghai den Bau von vier Kanonenbooten und einer neuen Schiffswerft für die chinesische Marine während des 1. Opiumkrieges und westlichen Besetzung zu beaufsichtigen.
In Ningpo bekleidete Verny auch das Amt des französischen Vizekonsuls.
Da in Japan die technische Unterlegenheit gegenüber dem Westen immer stärker empfunden wurde, beschloss 1864 das Tokugawa-Shōgunat, in Zusammenarbeit mit Frankreich, eine neue, moderne Schiffswerft zu bauen und im Februar 1865 wurde eine entsprechende Vereinbarung erreicht.
Nach dieser Entscheidung begannen sogleich die Verhandlungen zwischen dem Finanzkommissar (kanjō-bugyō) des Shōgunats, Oguri Tadamasa (1827-1868), und dem französischen Generalkonsul Léon Roches.
Roches hatte anfangs die Idee, das Projekt durch den Tausch japanischer Seide gegen französische Ausrüstung zu finanzieren.

Weil sich für diese Art von Geschäft keine Unterstützer in Frankreich fanden, wurde die Summe von 1,7 Millionen Francs bereitgestellt, abgesichert durch eine Hypothek der französischen Bankgesellschaft Société Générale.

In diesem Stadium überredete Roches seinen entfernten Verwandten, Francois Léonce Verny, Leiter dieses Projekts zu werden. Er leitete dieses anspruchsvolle Projekt von der Planung bis zur Ausführung.

Im Januar 1865 kam er von Shanghai nach Yokosuka und begann die Pläne umzusetzen. Er überwachte die Vorbereitung der Baustelle und machte Pläne für Werften, Stahlwerke, und verschiedene andere Gebäude. Darüber hinaus überwachte er die Anschaffung und Installation von Maschinen und Anlagen, und arbeitete Anordnungen zur Leitung der Werft und ihr Personal aus.
Zunächst war Yokohama als möglicher Standort erwogen worden; nach Ortsbesichtigungen entschieden sich der Vertreter des Shōgunats und Verny dann aber für Yokosuka - angeblich wegen der vergleichbaren Lage von Toulons Hafen.
Obwohl er erst 28 Jahre alt war, erwies er sich nicht nur als ein erfahrener Techniker, sondern auch als ein hervorragender Leiter.

Nachdem Verny eine hydrographische Karte von der Bucht von Yokohama und ein Grobkonzept angefertigt hatte, verließ er Yokosuka am 27.06.1865 und fuhr mit dem britischen Postschiff Nepal nach Frankreich, begleitet von zwei Vertretern des Shōgunats, Hida Hamagorō und Shibata Takenaka, um Ausrüstungen und Maschinen für die Yokosuka-Werke zu kaufen.
Das Konzept für das Yokosuka Arsenals sah vor, zwei Docks und drei Bauwerften, eine Eisengießerei und zwei Reparatureinrichtungen in Yokosuka zu bauen mit dem Ziel, Yokohama als Werkstattzentrum und Yokosuka als Hauptzentrum des Schiffbaus auszubauen.

In Marseille am 27.08.1865 angekommen, begann er Ingenieure, Ärzte, Werkmeister und Arbeiter, hauptsächlich von den Marinearsenalen von Brest, Cherbourg und Toulon, zu rekrutieren - insgesamt 43 Personen, teilweise mit Familien. Als seinen Stellvertreter engagierte er Claude Thibaudier, der ebenfalls wie Verny Marineingenieur war (und zukünftiger Schwager), Cousin Emile de Montgolfier als Buchhalter und seinen Freund aus China Savattier als Doktor.
In den Monaten, wo er in Frankreich war, unterstützte Verny auch die Verhandlungen zur Entsendung einer Militärmission nach Japan, die die Modernisierung der bakufu Armee ab 1867 (erste Französische Militärmission) unterstützen und schließlich auf der Seite des bakufu im Boshin Krieg unter Leitung von Jules Brunet stehen sollte.

Verny, Hida und Shibata kauften außerdem Materialien und Ausrüstungsteile, z. B. drei Kräne und vier Dampfhämmer in Holland. Hida und die ersten französischen Angestellten trafen im März 1866 in Yokosuka ein, Verny folgte im Juni 1866.
Sofort wurden 65 japanische Techniker und 2.500 japanische Arbeiter angestellt. Der Bau des ersten Trockendocks begann im Jahre 1868, der zweite folgte 1871.

Verny war mit seiner Verlobten nach Japan gekommen, Elisabeth Brenier de Montmorand, genannt "Marie". Das Paar heiratete im August 1867 in Schanghai. Drei ihrer vier lebenden Kinder wurden in Yokosuka geboren: Françoise (1870), Georges Marie Edmond (1874) und Edmée (1875). Die Familie lebte in einer offenbar geräumigen Villa innerhalb des Werftgeländes. Zwei weitere Töchter, Louise (1876) und Cathérine (1879), kamen später in Aubenas bzw. Firminy zur Welt.
Zwischen den französischen Arbeitern und dem bakufu wurden Verträge über einen Zeitraum von zunächst vier Jahren geschlossen.
Nachdem die Ausrüstung geliefert wurde, konnten die französischen und japanischen Arbeiter mit dem Bau der Werft in Yokosuka im März 1867 beginnen.
Darüber hinaus bauten die Franzosen auch eine Kaserne für 300 Mann in Yokohama.
In Yokosuka gründete Verny auch eine Ingenieurschule (école de maistrance), auf der Japaner nach einer Art Miniatur-Lehrplan der "École Polytechnique" in Mathematik, Physik, Schiffbau - und Französisch - unterrichtet wurden. Auf dieser Schule wurden zwischen 1865 und 1907 fast 300 Ingenieure und Techniker ausgebildet - ein wichtiger Beitrag zur zukünftigen Industrialisierung Japans.
Verny etablierte ein Ausbildungssystem auf zwei Ebenen - das Studium im Ausland war eines seiner wichtigsten Elemente des Wissenstransfers in der Yokosuka-Werft.
In den Jahren der französischen Führung der Yokosuka-Werft wurden acht Personen nach Frankreich entsandt, um an der französischen Marineakademie zu studieren. Nach ihrer Rückkehr wurden sie oft Leiter einer Schiffswerft oder nahmen leitende Funktionen im technischen Bereich wahr, wie zum Beispiel Yamaguchi Tatsuya.

Der Bau des Docks Nr. 1 in Yokosuka (gebaut aus Stein, vierzig Meter breit, 111 Meter lang und neun Meter tief), das symbolische Zentrum der Werft, begann im April 1867. Zu dieser Zeit befand sich aber Japan in den Geburtswehen eines epochalen politischen Übergangs.
Die Anti-Shōgunat-Truppen, geführt von den mächtigen Satsuma und Chōshu Domains, starteten plötzlich eine Offensive, die letztlich zum Untergang der Tokugawa-Regierung und zur Gründung einer neuen Regierung unter Kaiser Meiji im Januar 1868 führte.
Diese Wendung der Ereignisse mussten die Franzosen um Roches und Verny ohne Zweifel erschüttert haben, da sie mit dem alten Regime verbunden waren, besonders aber dann auch die Inhaftierung und Enthauptung ihres Freundes Oguri Tadamasa, der dem Shōgunat die Treue gehalten hatte.

Im Mai 1868 wurde die Yokosuka Werft von der neuen Regierung übernommen.

Da Verny Vertragspartner des Shōgunats war, war es nach dessen Sturz zweifelhaft, ob er seine Arbeit jemals würde fortsetzen können. Studenten der Marineschule in Yokosuka wurden in Zwangsurlaub geschickt, da sie einst vom Shōgunat ausgesucht worden waren.
Am 13.03.1868 wurden Werft und Schule von der neuen Meiji-Regierung geschlossen. Im April 1869 ging Verny vorübergehend nach Frankreich zurück.

Obwohl Frankreich den Auftrag für den Werftbau vom Shōgunat erhalten hatte, die japanische Regierung im Oktober 1870 verkündete, die britische Royal Navy als ihr Vorbild zu übernehmen und Frankreich eine Niederlage im deutsch-französischen Krieg von 1870/71 erfahren musste, endete der französische Einfluss auf die Entwicklung der japanischen Marine nicht.

Die neue japanische Regierung erkannte die Wichtigkeit, das größte japanische Industrieprojekt zu vollenden und sie war sich auch über die technische Leistung von Verny bewußt, obwohl sich der Bau der Werft als etwa 25-mal kostspieliger erwies als einst veranschlagt. In der Tat wurde dem Projekt noch größere Priorität als zuvor eingeräumt. Im November 1869 wurde die Werft dem Finanzministerium (Ōkurashō) unterstellt. Verny, der aus Frankreich zurückkehrte, wurde weiterhin als Direktor angestellt.

Mit einer feierlichen Eröffnungszeremonie am 08.02.1871 wurden die Werft in Yokosuka als erster moderner Schiffbaubetrieb Japans und das Trainings- und Ausbildungszentrum in Yokohama eingeweiht und konnten ihre Arbeit aufnehmen. Der Name wurde in Yokosuka Zōsenjō - Schiffswerft Yokosuka - geändert und im November 1872 schließlich vom Marineministerium (Kaigunshō) übernommen.

Der Meiji-Kaiser selbst nahm großes Interesse an der Entwicklung und war überzeugt, dass die Werft eine Schlüsselfunktion für den Schiffbau und die Maschinenbau-Industrie eines modernen Japans bildete. Er nahm an der Grundsteinlegung für Dock Nr. 2 im Januar 1871 teil und gewährte Verny eine Audienz. 1873 und 1875 besuchte er die Baustelle.

Die Werft in Yokosuka war bald der bedeutendste Industrie-Komplex in Japan und hatte um 1870 ca. bereits etwa 1000 Beschäftigte. In den ersten zehn Jahren ihres Bestehens wurde wie im Zeitraffer die Entwicklung des Schiffbaus vom Holz- zum Stahlrumpf, vom Segel zur Dampfmaschine vollzogen.
Der Bau des ersten in Japan hergestellten, von Verny selbst entworfenen Kriegsschiffes, begann 1873. Der feierliche Stapellauf dieses Schiffes fand am 05.05.1875 in Gegenwart des Meiji-Kaisers statt. Seiki, obwohl vergleichsweise klein, stellte ihre Seetüchtigkeit 1878/ 79 bei einer Reise nach GB unter Beweis.
Ebenfalls 1873 wurde der Kiel der kleinen kaiserlichen Radyacht Jingei gelegt. Bis 1889 folgte fast im Jahresrhythmus jeweils ein weiterer Neubau. Amagi (1875) entstand ebenfalls nach Plänen von Verny. Banjō (1877), Kaimon (1877) und Tenryū (1878), basierten bereits auf japanischen Entwürfen mit französischer Hilfe.

Das nächste Paar, Katsuragi (1882) und Musashi (1884), wurde von dem japanischen Schiffsarchitekten Sasō Sachū entworfen. Diese "Komposit-Schiffe" (auf Japanisch tekkotsu kikawa-sen genannt) besaßen noch Holzbeplankung, aber bereits eiserne Spanten. Mit dem Kanonenboot Atago (1886) und dem Kreuzer Takao (1886) war der Übergang zum Stahlschiffbau vollzogen.

Die Pläne für den Kreuzer Takao stammten von dem Franzosen Émile Bertin, der auf Wunsch der japanischen Regierung von 1886 bis 1890 als Werftdirektor, Berater und Konstrukteur in Yokosuka tätig war. Unter seiner Leitung fand die Werft vollends Anschluss an westliche Standards.

Seit 1903 wurde die Werft "Marinearsenal Yokosuka" (Yokosuka Kaigun Kōshō) genannt. Der staatliche Werftkomplex beschäftigte gegen Ende der Meiji-Ära 8000 Personen. Die Ausrüstung umfasste sechs Helgen und fünf Trockendocks, deren größtes 227 m lang und 35 m breit war. Am 18.01.1909 wurde auf der Helling Nr. 2 der Kiel des ersten japanischen Dreadnoughts gelegt. Dieses Schiff, Settsu, wurde am 01.07.1912 fertig gestellt, nur wenige Tage vor dem Ende der Meiji-Ära.

Obwohl Verny als Schiffsbauingenieur ausgebildet war, musste er einen beträchtlichen Teil seiner Arbeit für die Infrastruktur aufwenden. Auf der Werft entstand eine eigene Ziegelei und Gießerei. Um die Wasserversorgung der Werft wie auch eines Teils der Stadt sicherzustellen, baute er die Hashimirizu-Wasserleitung.

Für einen sicheren Zugang vom Meer nach Yokosuka mussten Leuchttürme entwickelt und gebaut werden. Unter Leitung von Léonce Verny, baute Louis Florent die ersten modernen Leuchttürmen in Japan in der gesamten Großraum Tokyo: Kannonzaki als erster Leuchtturm in Japan nach westlicher Prägung (Februar 1869); Nojimazaki (Januar 1870), Shinagawa (März 1870) und Jōgashima (September 1870). Es waren alles Ziegelbauten.

Der Jōgashima Leuchtturm war seine letzter; die meisten der späteren japanischen Leuchttürmen wurden vom Schotten Richard Henry Brunton gebaut.

Nach der Meiji-Restauration begannen sich Spannungen außerhalb und innerhalb der Werft zu entwickeln und zu vergrößern. Das Marineministerium klagte wiederholt, dass Verny zu viel Geld ausgegeben oder sogar verschwendet hätte; insbesondere wurde das Gehalt des Werftarztes Ludovic Savatier kritisiert. Andererseits waren auch die japanischen Angestellten zunehmend unzufrieden, weil sie weiterhin, trotz ihrer nunmehr erworbenen Fähigkeiten, strikt den Anweisungen ihrer französischen Vorgesetzten zu folgen hatten. Am 15.11.1875 wurde fast das gesamte französische Personal entlassen.
Es war der Zeitpunkt erreicht, wo die Werft in Yokosuka die Hauptbasis der japanischen Marine bildete und die meisten Führungsaufgaben von japanischen Kräften übernommen werden konnte. Dabei produzierte die Werft nicht nur Schiffe, sondern auch Leuchttürme, sowie Ausrüstungen für den Bergbau.
Mit der Fertigstellung der Werft und der Einrichtungen in Yokohama war Vernys Aufgabe erfüllt. Während seiner Tätigkeit als französischer kaigun o-yatoi (Navy FE) war Verny für den Bau und die Reparatur von 263 Schiffen (101 ausländische und 162 japanische) zuständig gewesen.

Verny's letzter Vertrag mit der japanischen Regierung endete am 09.03.1876 und am 12.03.1876 reiste Verny, jetzt auf einem französischen Postdampfer, nach Frankreich. Zuvor übergab er noch der Meiji Regierung einen objektiven, gründlichen Bericht zum Projekt. Eine der bemerkenswerten Einschätzungen bestand darin, dass die Werft besonders durch Reparatur- und Wartungsarbeiten von ausländischen Handelsschiffen profitierte.
Für ein Jahr wurde Thibaudier sein Nachfolger. Danach erhielt die Werft bis zu Bertin's Ankunft einen japanischen Direktor.

Verny, erst 39 Jahre, nahm, aus welchen Gründen auch immer, seine frühere Tätigkeit als Schiffsingenieur nicht mehr auf und kam anscheinend auch nie wieder nach Japan zurück. Zu einer völlig anderen Branche überwechselnd, arbeitete er, nicht weit von seinem Geburtsort entfernt, ab Januar 1877 bis 1895 für die "Compagnie des Houillères de Firminy" als Leiter der Kohlegruben "Mines de Roche-la-Molière & Firminy". Daneben war er von 1881 bis 1900 Mitglied der Handelskammer von St. Étienne und lange Zeit auch deren Sekretär.

Man erinnert sich in Japan an Francois Léonce Verny als Symbol der Modernisierung und der Freundschaft mit Frankreich. Am 30.09.1922 wurden in einem Park am Meer namens Verny Park (Verny-koen) gegenüber dem Eingang zur Yokosuka Werft, zwei Statuen enthüllt, von Verny und Oguri Tadamasa. Jedes Jahr um den 15. November findet eine vom Arsenal organisierte Gedenkfeier statt.

Später wurde ein entsprechendes Museum in Erinnerung an den Gründer der Werft eröffnet.

Mit der Niederlage im Zweiten Weltkrieg 1945 wurde die Anlage den USA übergeben, die daraus eine Marinebasis für die 7. US-Flotte mit zwei Steindocks machten und Teile der von Léonce Verny vor fast 150 Jahren erstellten Infrastruktur, die noch intakt waren, nutzten.

EN: Due to the the influence of the French Minister Leon Roches, the only 27 years old Léonce Verny was asked in 1865 to establish an entirely new shipyard in Japan, based on the latest Western technology and Verny agreed.
In his eleven years at Yokosuka, he created many of the basic conditions that enabled Japan soon to rise to an important sea power.

Verny had attended the Lycée Impérial at Lyon and, from 1856 on, the prestigious École Polytechnique in Paris and he chose the maritime works as major topic.
Between 1858 and 1860 he was trained at the École d'application du génie maritime in several crafts such as iron shipbuilding, in the saw mill and carpenter's workshop, at steam engines, in iron work and ship repair.

After his employment at the Naval Arsenal of Brest, he was sent to the "Division navale des mers de Chine et du Japon" from 1861 to 1864 to supervise in Ningpo and Shanghai the construction of four gunboats and a new shipyard for the Chinese navy during the first opium war and western occupancy of China.
In Ningpo, Verny acted as French vice consul as well.

Since the technical inferiority compared to the West was increasingly felt in Japan, the Tokugawa shōgunate decided in 1864 to build, in cooperation with France, a new and modern navy yard and in February 1865 a corresponding agreement was reached.

After this decision, negotiations were started instantly between the shōgunate's commissioner of finance (kanjō-bugyō), Oguri Tadamasa (1827-1868), and the French consul general Léon Roches.

Originally, Roches had the idea to finance the project by exchanging Japanese silk for French equipment.

Because no supporters for this kind of business could be found in France, the amount of 1,7 Million Francs was provided, safeguarded by a mortgage at the French banking corporation Société Générale.

At this state of affairs, Roches persuaded his distant relative, Francois Léonce Verny, to become director of this project. He led this ambitious project from planning to execution.

He crossed over from Shanghai to Yokosuka in January 1865 and set to work on the plans. He supervised the preparation of the site and made plans for dockyards, steelworks, and various other architectural structures. In addition, he oversaw the purchase and installation of machinery and equipment, and worked out systems for management of the shipyard and its personnel.
Originally, Yokohama was considered as a possible location; but after a visit to various places, the representatives of the shōgunate and Verny decided for Yokosuka - supposedly because of a site comparable to
Toulon’s harbour.
Though only twenty-eight years old, he proved to be not only a skilled engineer, but an outstanding leader and manager.

After Verny had made a hydrographic map of the Bay of Yokohama and a rough concept, he left Yokosuka on June 27, 1865 and sailed aboard the British Royal Mail Steamer Nepal to France to purchase equipment and machinery for the Yokosuka works, accompanied by two representatives of the shōgunate, Hida Hamagorō and Shibata Takenaka.

In line with the concept of the Yokosuka arsenal two docks and three shipyards, an iron foundry and two repair facilities have been proposed to be built in Yokosuka with the aim of developing Yokohama as a workshop center and Yokosuka as a major shipbuilding center.

Arriving in Marseilles on August 27, 1865, he began to recruit engineers, surgeons, technicians and workers, mainly from the naval arsenals at Brest, Cherbourg and Toulon - altogether 43 Personen, partly with families.
As his deputy he engaged Claude Thibaudier, a naval engineer like himself (and future brother-in-law), cousin Emile de Montgolfier as accountant, and his friend from China Savattier as doctor.

During the months he was in France, Verny also helped in the negotiations to send a military mission to Japan, that was to help modernize the army of the bakufu from 1867 (1st French Military Mission), and would take the side of the bakufu during the Boshin War under the leadership of Jules Brunet.

Besides, Verny, Hida and Shibata bought material and equipment, for example three cranes and four steam hammers from Holland. Hida and the first French employees arrived at Yokosuka in March 1866, Verny followed in June 1866.
Immediately, 65 Japanese technicians and 2,500 Japanese workers were hired. The construction of the first dry dock began in 1868; the second was to follow in 1871.

Verny had travelled to Japan with his bride, Elisabeth Brenier de Montmorand, called "Marie". The couple married in August 1867 in Shanghai. Three of their four living children were born in Yokosuka: Françoise (1870), Georges Marie Edmond (1874) and Edmée (1875). The family lived in an apparently spacious villa within the shipyard grounds. Two more daughters, Louise (1876) and Cathérine (1879), were born later in Aubenas and Firminy, respectively.

Between the French workers and the bakufu corresponding contracts had been signed for an initial period of four years.

In March 1867, after the equipment had arrived the French and Japanese workers could begin to construct the shipyard in Yokosuka.
In addition, the French also built barracks for 300 men in Yokohama.
In Yokosuka, Verny founded an engineering school (école de maistrance) as well, where Japanese were taught in a much reduced curriculum of the "École polytechnique" in mathematics, physics, shipbuilding - and French. At this school, nearly 300 engineers and technicians were trained between 1865 and 1907 - an important contribution to Japan's future industrialization.
Verny established a training system on two levels - the study abroad was one of his most important elements of the knowledge transfer in the Yokosuka shipyard.
During the years of the French leadership of the Yokosuka shipyard, eight persons were sent to France to study at the French Naval Academy.
Upon their return, they became often director of a shipyard or took senior positions in technical departments, such as Yamaguchi Tatsuya.

Construction of the No. 1 dock at Yokosuka (built of stone, forty meters wide, 111 meters long and nine meters deep), the symbolic center of the shipyard, began in April 1867, but by then Japan was in the throes of an epochal political transition.
The anti-shōgunate forces led by the powerful Satsuma and Chōshu domains suddenly launched an offensive, ultimately leading to the downfall of the Tokugawa government and the founding of a new government under the Emperor Meiji in January 1868.
No doubt this turn of events must have shaken Frenchmen like Roches and Verny, who had been devoted to the old regime. They must have been especially distressed when their friend Oguri Tadamasa who remained loyal to the shōgunate, was captured by the army of the new government and beheaded.
In May 1868 the Yokosuka Shipyard was taken over by the new government.

Since Verny had a contract with the shōgunate, it became doubtful after its downfall whether he ever could continue his work. Students of the shipbuilding school at Yokosuka had been forced to take a leave because they had once been selected by the shōgunate.
Both the yard and the school were closed by the new Meiji government on March 13, 1868. In April 1869, Verny went temporarily back to France.

The French influence on the development of the Japanese Navy didn't come to an end, although France had signed the contract for the shipyard construction with the shōgunate, the Japanese government announced in October 1870 to take the British Royal Navy as their model and France had experienced a defeat in the Franco-German War of 1870/ 1871.

Though the construction of the yard proved to be about 25 times more expensive than had been reckoned once, the new government, however, was well aware of the importance and potential of the shipyard, and it did not interrupt the construction. In fact, the project was given even greater priority than before. In November of 1869, the yard came under the jurisdiction of the Ministry of Finance (Ōkurashō) and Verny, having returned from France, was still employed as director.

With a grand opening ceremony on February 8, 1871 the shipyard in Yokosuka as the first modern shipbuilding company of Japan and the training and education center in Yokohama had been inaugurated and could take up their work.
The name was changed into Yokosuka Zōsenjō - Shipyard Yokosuka - and eventually transferred under responsibility of the Department of Navy (Kaigunshō) in November 1872.

The Meiji emperor himself took great interest in its progress, believing that the shipyard held the keys to the shipbuilding technology and mechanical engineering industry for modern Japan.
He attended the ground-breaking ceremony for the No. 2 dock held in January 1871 and granted Verny an audience. In both 1873 and 1875 he returned to tour the site.

The Yokosuka yard was soon the country's biggest industrial complex in Japan, around 1870 employing about 1,000 persons. During the first ten years of its existence, the development of shipbuilding, from wooden walls to steel hulls, from sail to steam, was repeated like in time lapse.

The construction of the first domestically built warship, designed by Verny himself, started in 1873. The ritual launching ceremony of this ship on May 5, 1875 was attended by Meiji Emperor.
Seiki, though comparatively small, proved her seaworthiness in 1878/79 during a voyage to Great Britain.
In 1873, the keel of the small Imperial paddle yacht Jingei was laid, too. Subsequently, a new ship followed almost every year until 1889. Amagi was built again according to Verny's plans (1875). Banjō (1877), Kaimon (1877) and Tenryū (1878) were already a Japanese design, aided by French engineers.

The next pair, Katsuragi (1882) and Musashi (1884), were designed by the Japanese naval architect Sasō Sachū. These "composite ships" (in Japanese called tekkotsu kikawa-sen) had still wood planking, but already iron frames.
With the gunboat Atago (1886) and the cruiser Takao (1886), the transition to steel shipbuilding was accomplished.

The plans for the cruiser Takao came from the Frenchman Émile Bertin, who was employed as director, adviser and constructor in Yokosuka from 1886 to 1890, upon request of the Japanese government. Under his guidance, the yard finally advanced to Western standards.

Since 1903 it was called "Yokosuka Navy Arsenal" (Yokosuka Kaigun Kōshō); the government-owned yard complex employed towards the end of the Meiji Era 8000 persons. It was equipped with six slipways and five dry docks, the biggest of them having a length of 227 m and a width of 35 m. On January 18, 1909, the keel of Japan's first dreadnought was laid on slipway No. 2. This ship, Settsu, was completed on July 1, 1912, just a few days before the end of the Meiji Era.

Though trained as a naval engineer, Verny had to spend a considerable part of his work on the infrastructure. He established a brick factory and a foundry associated to the shipyard. In order to secure the water supply for the yard and for a part of the town as well, he built the Hashimirizu water way.

For a safer access to Yokosuka from the sea, lighthouses had to be designed and built. Under the direction of Léonce Verny, Louis Florent constructed the first modern lighthouses in Japan throughout the Tokyo area: Kannonzaki as the first Western-style lighthouse in Japan (February 1869); Nojimazaki (January 1870), Shinagawa (March 1870), and Jōgashima (September 1870), all made from brick.

The Jōgashima lighthouse was his last one; most of the further Japanese lighthouses were subsequently built by the Scotsman Richard Henry Brunton .

After the Meiji Restoration, tensions around and inside the yard began to develop and to increase. The naval ministry complained repeatedly that too much money had been spent or even wasted by Verny; especially the salary of the yard's surgeon Ludovic Savatier was criticized. On the other hand, Japanese employees were often dissatisfied as well, because they had still, in spite of their meanwhile acquired skills, to obey strictly the orders of their French superiors.
On November 15, 1875, nearly all the French personnel were finally dismissed.

The point was reached that the Yokosuka shipyard had established as the main base of the Japanese Navy and most management tasks could be taken over by Japanese personnel. The shipyard produced not only ships but also lighthouses, as well as equipment for the mining industry.

With the completion of the shipyard and the facilities in Yokohama Verny's mission was accomplished. While working as a French kaigun o-yatoi (Navy FE) Verny was responsible for the construction and repair of 263 ships (101 foreign and 162 Japanese).

For which reasons whatsoever, Verny, now only 39 years of age, did not resume his former work as a naval engineer, and he apparently never came back to Japan. Switching to quite a different business, he worked, not very far from his birthplace, from January 1877 until 1895 for the "Compagnie des Houillères de Firminy" as director of the coal mine "Mines de Roche-la-Molière & Firminy". Besides, he was a member of the chamber of commerce of St. Étienne from 1881 to 1900 and for a long time its secretary as well.

Francois Léonce Verny is remembered in Japan as a symbol of modernization and of friendship with France. On September 30, 1922, in a seaside park named Verny Park (Verny-koen) across the inlet from the Yokosuka Shipyard, two statues of Verny and Oguri Tadamasa were unveiled. Every year, around November, 15, a memory ceremony is organised by the Arsenal.

Later a corresponding museum was added in memory of the founder of the shipyard.

With the defeat in World War II in 1945, the facilities were turned over to the United States and made into a naval base of the 7th US-Fleet with two stone docks and parts of the infrastructure created by Léonce Verny nearly 150 years ago still in place and intact and used by the US Navy.

Bis heute wird er oft für einen Franzosen gehalten. Aber als Welschschweizer war Französisch seine Muttersprache; zudem hatte er sich wohl, da die Schweiz noch nicht von Japan anerkannt worden war, unter französischen Schutz gestellt. Veuve war vermutlich aus geschäftlichen Gründen im Jahr 1860 nach Japan gekommen, eine aktive Geschäftstätigkeit ist aber nicht bekannt. Vielmehr ist er ab 1861 Sekrtär der Französischen Gesandtschaft und später auch Dolmetscher. Nachdem der Handels- und Freundschafts- Vertrag zwischen Japan und der Schweiz am 06.02.1864 unterzeichnet worden war, errichtete die Schweiz eigene diplomatische Vertretungen in Japan. Am 19.08.1864 wurde Veuve zum Schweizer Vize-Honorarkonsul in Hakodate bestellt. Er übte dieses Amt vier Jahre lang aus. Am am 13.05.1868 wurde er entpflichtet, da das Konsulat in Hakodate aufgegeben wurde. Nur zwei Jahre später, am 26.02.1870, verstarb Henri Veuve. Er wurde auf dem Ausländer-Friedhof von Yokohama beigesetzt.

After the Trade and Friendship Treaty between Japan and Switzerland had been signed on February 6, 1864, Switzerland installed diplomatic representations of its own in Japan. On August 19, 1864, Veuve was appointed Swiss honorary Vice-Consul at Hakodate. He held this office for four years. On May 13, 1869 he was declared off duty, because the Hakodate consulate was closed. Only two years later, on February 26, 1870, Henri Veuve died. He was buried in the Foreigners´ Cemetery of Yokohama.

Viauds Vater war Steuereinnehmer der Hafenstadt Rochefort an der Atlantikküste.
Ein verlorener Rechtsstreit hatte das Vermögen der Familie aufgezehrt, und Jules musste 1867, statt die Eliteschule École Polytechnique besuchen zu können, auf die örtliche Marineschule gehen. Er wurde Seeoffizier. Einen Aufenthalt in der Levante nutze er zu einem Roman, bei dem die Haremsdame Hatice und ihr englischer Liebhaber gemeinsam in den Tod gehen. Der Roman erschien anonym. Mit ihm aber hatte Viaud, der sich als Schriftsteller bald "Pierre Loti" nannte, sein Thema und auch seinen Tonfall gefunden.
Viaud-Loti, am 24.2.1881 zum Kapitänleutnant (Lieutenant de vaisseau) befördert, diente auf dem Panzerkreuzer La Triomphante, dem Flaggschiff des französischen Fernostgeschwaders. Nach dem Cholera-Tod des Admirals sollte vor der Rückreise noch eine längere Überholung auf der Mitsubishi-Werft in Nagasaki stattfinden.
Noch vor Ankunft in Nagasaki am 9.7.1885 erläuterte Viaud seinem Kameraden Yves Kermadec seine Pläne über die Gestaltung des mehrwöchigen Aufenthalts:
"Ich werde mich verheiraten, ja. Mit einer kleinen Frau mit gelber Haut, mit schwarzem Haar und mit Katzenaugen. Sie wird nicht größer sein als eine Puppe".

Der Wunsch wurde Wirklichkeit durch die teure Hilfe von "Monsieur Kangourou", der offiziell Bleicher war, sein Geld aber vor allem als Heiratsvermittler (nakōdo) verdiente. Nachdem die Einwilligung der Eltern der "Braut auf Zeit" vorlag, konnte die Hochzeit stattfinden.
Am 23.7.1885 berichtete Viaud seinem Freund Marcel Sémézies: "Ich habe vorige Woche vor den japanischen Behörden eine gewisse Okané-san geheiratet, für einen Monat, mit der Möglichkeit einer Verlängerung." Viaud gab ihr einen neuen Namen, der sie etwas älter erscheinen ließ, und gleichzeitig auf das japanische Wappen anspielte: "Madame Chrysanthème" (Kiku-san). Im Roman dauert die Ehe 80 Tage, in Wirklichkeit waren es nur 36 Tage gewesen. Am 12.8.1885 verließ Viauds Schiff wieder den Hafen von Nagasaki.

Lotis Roman "Madame Chrysanthème" wurde ein großer Erfolg. Er erschien 1887 als Vorabdruck in der Zeitung "Le Figaro" und ein Jahr darauf als Buch. Die Mischung aus Erotik und Exotik, aus Liebe und Trennung, aus Fern- und Heimweh traf auf ein breites Lesepublikum. Das Buch erlebte zu Lebzeiten Lotis 222 Neuauflagen und Nachdrucke; es wurde in fast alle europäischen Sprachen übersetzt.
Der Roman überdauerte seine Zeit nur durch eine Reihe von Mutationen. Über die Frau des in Japan wirkenden Missionars Irvin Henry Correll erreichte der Stoff ihren Bruder John Luther Long in Amerika. Er machte daraus eine kleine Erzählung mit einem amerikanischen Marineoffizier und einer nun "Madame Butterfly" genannten Japanerin in den Hauptrollen. Die Geschichte erschien 1898 erstmals in der Zeitschrift "Century" und kam so zu dem Theaterautor David Belasco, dessen Einakter "Madame Butterfly - The Tragedy of Japan" 1900 in New York uraufgeführt wurde. Europa brachte dann Musik in das Stück. Nachdem André Messager 1903 eine "Opéra lyrique" mit dem Titel "Madame Chrysanthème" komponiert hatte, folgte nur ein Jahr darauf Giacomo Puccinis Oper "Madama Butterfly".

Aus Lotis einstiger männlicher Selbstdarstellung war nun ein Klassiker und damit eine bis heute unverwüstliche „Schnulze“ des internationalen Musiktheaters geworden.

Ein derart langes Leben war den anderen Japan-Büchern Lotis nicht beschieden. Die "Japoneries d'automne" (etwa: Japanisches im Herbst, 1889) stellten wohl mehr eine Zweitverwertung der "übriggebliebenen" Eindrücke aus Kyoto, Kobe, Yokohama und Nikkō dar.
"La troisième jeunesse de madame Prune" (Die Dritte Jugend der Madame Prune, 1905) geht zwar auf einen erneuten Aufenthalt - abermals eine Werftliegezeit - in Nagasaki zurück, erschöpft sich aber auf fast 350 großzügig bedruckten Seiten in Schilderungen schöner Landschaften oder schöner Frauen. Madame Prune ("Frau Pflaume"), die bereits in Lotis erstem Japan-Roman zugegen gewesen war, tritt erst zum Schluss wieder auf.
Sie hat ihre Schönheit verloren, eine Frau, alternd, etwas "angeschlagen" (marquée) nach "einer schier endlosen Jugend".

Auch Loti hatte keine ewige Jugend. In seinem Haus in Hendaye nahe der baskischen Grenze erlitt er 1921 einen Schlaganfall, der ihn halbseitig lähmte. Als er zwei Jahre später starb, bekam er in St. Pierre auf der Insel Oléron ein Staatsbegräbnis auf seinem eigenen Grundstück.
1937 wurde er auf einer Briefmarke geehrt, die ihn nicht in Japan, sondern vor seinem geliebten Istanbul zeigt.

EN: His sea journeys have led the French naval officer Julien Viaud to a variety of countries. The books he published as "Pierre Loti" mostly play in (then) exotic countries.
But they give less information about these countries than about the way the author liked to be seen.
This also applies to his three "Japanese" books: Madame Chrysanthème, Japoneries de l'automne and La troisième jeunesse de Madame Prune.
Viaud's father was tax collector of the port city of Rochefort on the Atlantic coast.
A lost lawsuit had exhausted the family's assets, and in 1867 Jules had to go to the local Naval School instead of being able to attend the elite school École Polytechnique. He became a naval officer.
He used a stay in the Levant to a novel in which the harem Lady Hatice and her English lover both commit suicide.
The novel appeared anonymously. But Viaud, who was soon to use his pen name "Pierre Loti", had found his theme as well as his tone.

Viaud-Loti, promoted to lieutenant-commander (Lieutenant de vaisseau) on February 24. 1881, served on the armoured cruiser La Triomphante, the flagship of the French Far East Squadron. After the death of the Admiral from cholera, a longer overhaul should take place at the Mitsubishi Nagasaki shipyard before the return.
Even before his arrival in Nagasaki on July 9, 1885, Viaud explained his comrade Yves Kermadec his plans for a several weeks stay:
"I'll get married, yes. With a little woman with yellow skin, with black hair, and with cat eyes. She will not be taller than a doll. "

The wish came true, with the albeit expensive aid of "Monsieur Kangourou", officially a bleacher, but earning his money mainly as a marriage broker (nakōdo). After the consent of the parents of the "bride on time" was given, the wedding could take place.
On July 23, 1885, Viaud told his friend Marcel Sémézies: "Last week I married a certain Okané-san in presence of the Japanese authorities, for a month, with the possibility of renewal."
Viaud gave her a new name which made her appear a little older and at the same time alluding to the Japanese coat of arms: "Madame Chrysanthème" (Kiku-san).
In the novel the marriage lasts 80 days, in reality it lasted only for 36 days. On August 12, 1885 Viaud's ship left the port of Nagasaki again.

Loti's novel "Madame Chrysanthème" became a great success. It appeared in 1887 in the newspaper "Le Figaro" as a series and was a year later edited as book. The mixture of erotic and exotic, loving and parting, longing for near or far places met a wide readership. The book experienced in Loti's lifetime 222 re-editions and reprints; it was translated into almost all European languages.
The novel survived only by a number of mutations. Through the wife of the missionary Irvin Henry Correll acting in Japan, the plot reached her brother John Luther Long in America.
He made it a short story with an American naval officer and a Japanese woman, now called "Madame Butterfly", as the main characters. The story first appeared in 1898 in the magazine "Century" and thus came to the playwright David Belasco, whose one-act play "Madame Butterfly - The Tragedy of Japan" had its premiere in 1900 in New York.
Europe then added music to the plot. After André Messager composed in 1903 an "Opéra lyrique" entitled "Madame Chrysanthème", Giacomo Puccini's opera "Madama Butterfly" followed only a year later.

Loti's former virile self-presentation had now become a classic and as such a till today indestructible tearjerker of the international music theatre.

Such a long life was not granted to Loti's other Japanese books. The "Japoneries d'automne" (roughly: Japanese Impressions in Autumn, 1889) probably represented more a secondary use of the "leftover" impressions from Kyoto, Kobe, Yokohama and Nikkō.

"La troisième jeunesse de madame Prune" (The Third Youth of Madame Prune, 1905) goes back to another stay - again at the shipyard - in Nagasaki, but exhausted itself on almost 350 generously printed pages in descriptions of beautiful landscapes or beautiful women.
Madame Prune ("Madame Plum"), who had already been present in Loti's first Japanese novel, is re-introduced late in the book.
She has lost her beauty, an ageing woman, a little "struck" (marquée) after "a sheer endless youth".

Loti, too, had no eternal youth. In his house in Hendaye near the Basque border he got a stroke paralysing him half-sided in 1921. When he died two years later, he was given a state funeral on his own property in St Pierre on the isle of Oléron.

In 1937 he was honoured with the issue of a stamp, depicting him not in Japan but before his beloved Istanbul.

Er starb 1957 im Zentral-Krankenhaus von Morgantown. Seine Frau und drei Kinder überlebten ihn.

He died in 1957 at the general hospital of Morgantown. His wife and three children survived him.

Aus unbekannten Gründen nahm General-Oberarzt (Médecin-capitaine) Vidal 1867 seinen Abschied aus der Armee.

Unbekannt ist auch, was oder wer Vidal veranlasste, nach Japan zu reisen. Ab Januar 1872 war er zwei Monate lang Professor für Französisch an der privaten Schule von Hayashi Kinji in Tokyo. Danach lebte er in Yokohama # 20 C. Vom 01.01.1873 bis 30.06.1873 war er Arzt in einer von ihm geleiteten Klinik in Tsukiji Tokyo.

Vidals nächste Stellung war, wie sich zeigen sollte, seine einflussreichste.
In Niigata an der japanischen Westküste hatte der seit 1872 amtierende neue Gouverneur Kusumoto Masataka sich entschlossen, ein Krankenhaus auf der Grundlage der westlichen statt der traditionellen japanischen Medizin zu errichten.
Dazu wurde das private Kyūritsu-Krankenhaus an der Igaku-machi in Niigata im November 1873 von der Stadt übernommen, bis es im April 1876 schließlich unter die Zuständigkeit der Präfektur Niigata gestellt wurde.

Vidal übernahm eine Stelle als erster ausländischer Arzt an dieser Klinik vom 15.05.1873 bis zum 14.04.1874, trat diese Stelle aber erst am 13. 11.1873 an. Im Dezember begannen 50 Medizinschüler eine Ausbildung, die auch in Mathematik, Physik und Englisch unterrichtet wurden. Lehrer für Anatomie wurde der frühere niederländische Marinearzt Constant George van Mansvelt.
Auch der Nachfolger Vidals im Mai 1874 war ein Holländer: Wilhelmus Hubertus van der Heijden, der bis 1905 als Arzt im Präfektur-Krankenhaus Niigata blieb.

An Stelle von François Eugène Maillhet, der als Arzt an die Ikuno-Mine ging, wurde Vidal im Juli 1874 Betriebsarzt in der Seidenspinnerei in Tomioka, die, von dem Franzosen Paul Brunat gegründet, bald eine der größten Einrichtungen ihrer Art weltweit war. Nachdem Brunat 1876 nach Frankreich zurückgekehrt war, ging die Leitung der Fabrik zunehmend in japanische Hände über.
Vidal wurde nun vom 25.02.1876 bis 27.04.1878 Nachfolger von Ludovic Savatier als Arzt auf der Schiffswerft Yokosuka.

Während seiner Zeit in Japan unternahm Vidal einige Reisen, die er teilweise in Begleitung des französischen Missionars Félix Evrard zurücklegte. Diese Reisen erfolgten zu Fuß. Sie dienten nicht nur der Erkundung von Land und Leuten, sondern wurden teilweise auch durch Vidals wechselnde Arbeitsstätten erforderlich.
Im Mitteilungsblatt der "Physikalisch-naturwissenschaftlichen Gesellschaft Toulouse" (Societé des sciences physiques et naturelles de Toulouse), bei der Vidal außerordentliches Mitglied war, veröffentlichte er zwischen 1874 und 1876 ausführliche Beschreibungen seiner Wanderungen durch Japan.
Bereits seine ersten Reisen zeigten sein botanisches Interesse. Die erste führte ihn im Juli 1872 von Yokohama nach Kyoto; die zweite im Oktober 1872 von Yokohama über Hakone und Atama wieder zurück nach Yokohama (Note sur la flore du Japon).

Die dritte Reise im Sommer 1873 stand im Zusammenhang mit der Aufnahme der ärztlichen Tätigkeit in Niigata und führte von Tsukiji über Takasaki und Nagaoka nach Niigata (Voyage de Yeddo à Niigata, Japon). Eine Rückreise von Niigata nach Tokyo über Shibata, Aidu Wakamatsu, Nikkō und Tomioka fand im Mai 1874 statt (De Niigata à Yedo, Japon). 1877 korrespondierte er mit dem Pater Urbain Faurié über botanische Fragen. Faurié wiederum schickte Vidal eine Liste von 600 Pflanzen, die er - ebenfalls auf dem Weg von Niigata nach Tokyo - gesammelt hatte, und ein 14 Seiten umfassendes Verzeichnis der Farne Japans.
Nach Ablauf seines Vertrags kehrte Vidal 1878, möglicherweise wegen seiner Eheschließung, nach Frankreich zurück.
Er ließ sich als Arzt in Südfrankreich nieder, vermutlich in Mazères.
Dort jedenfalls befindet sich sein Grab. Es wurde erst vor einigen Jahren aufgefunden und wieder hergerichtet.

Vidal's next employment was, as it turned out, his most influential one.
In Niigata, at the Japanese West coast, the new governor Kusumoto Masataka, acting since 1872, had made up his mind to form a hospital based on Western instead of the traditional Japanese medicine.

In order to realise this task, the private Kyūritsu hospital, Igaku-machi, Niigata, was first taken over by the city before it finally was put under the responsibility of the Niigata prefecture in April of 1876.

Vidal was employed as the first foreign doctor in this clinic from May 15, 1873 to April 14, 1874, but commenced his work only on November 13, 1873. In December, 50 students of medicine began a training that comprised lessons in mathematics, physics and English as well. Teacher of anatomy became the former Netherlands naval doctor Constant George van Mansvelt.
Vidal's successor in May 1874 also came from Holland: Wilhelmus Hubertus van der Heijden, who stayed till 1905 as a doctor at the Prefectural Hopital Niigata.

As successor of François Eugène Maillhet who was ordered to the Ikuno Mine, Vidal became from July 1874 doctor at the silk spinning mill in Tomioka, which was founded by the Frenchman Paul Brunat developing to one of the biggest factories of its kind in the world.
After Brunat had returned to France in 1876, the management of the factory was laid incrementally into Japanese hands. Vidal again had to change his employment: from February 25, 1876 to April 27, 1878 he became successor of Ludovic Savatier as surgeon of the Yokosuka shipyard.
During his time in Japan, Vidal made a couple of voyages, partly accompanied by the French missionary Félix Evrard. These travels were made on foot.
They were not merely intended to get familiar with Japan and the Japanese. In some cases, they also were necessitated by Vidal's changing employments.
In the bulletin of the "Physical and Natural Scientific Society of Toulouse" (Societé des sciences physiques et naturelles de Toulouse), where Vidal was an extraordinary member, he published between 1874 and 1876 detailed reports about his wanderings through Japan.

Already his first travels showed Vidal's interest in botany. The first voyage led him in July 1872 from Yokohama to Kyoto; the second in October 1872 from Yokohama via Hakone and Atama back to Yokohama (Note sur la flore du Japon).

The third voyage in summer of 1873 was connected to the beginning of his medical employment in Niigata and led from Tsukiji via Takasaki and Nagaoka to Niigata (Voyage de Yeddo à Niigata, Japon). A voyage back from Niigata to Tokyo via Shibata, Aidu Wakamatsu, Nikkō and Tomioka took place in May 1874 (De Niigata à Yedo, Japon). On his last voyage from Tomioka to Tokyo in May 1875, he made a visit to the volcano Asama and to the mineral sources of Kusatsu (Exploration du volcan Asama-Yama et des eaux minérales de Kousats, Kawara et Kami-Isobe au Japon).
In later years, the curing effects of these sources were to be examined by the German doctor Erwin Baelz.
About his foot travels, Vidal didn't only write comprehensive reports, he also exchanged specimens of plants, for example with Savatier, still in Yokosuka.
In 1877 he was corresponding with the French missionary, Father Urbain Faurié, on botanical issues. On the other hand, Faurié sent Vidal a list of 600 plants he had collected - also en route from Niigata to Tokyo - and attached a 14-page register of the Japanese ferns.

After his contract had expired, Vidal returned to France in 1878, possibly because of his marriage.

He settled as a doctor in Southern France, supposedly in Mazères.
There, at least, his grave is situated. It was found only a few years ago, and then restored again.

Das Motiv für diese schrecklichte Tat war nicht erkennbar, außer vielleicht aus Krankheitsgründen. Geistesgestört war er auf keinen Fall. Er hatte großartige Fähigkeiten, war aber Opfer eines Leberleidens, welches immer sein Leben bedrohte.

Sein erster Einsatzort sollte Siam (Thailand) sein, bevor er aber die Tätigkeit aufnehmen konnte, wurde er nach Peking beordert. Nach etwa ein zwei Jahren erreichte er eine Versetzung nach Japan, da er das Klima in China nicht vertrug. Aber auch hier war er mit seinem Los nicht zufrieden und er hätte eine Vertragslösung bevorzugt.

Er wurde auf dem Ausländer-Friedhof Yokohama beigesetzt.

In 1865 he came to Japan as student interpreter to work in the British Legation of Tokyo, Consular Service.

The official cause of death was given as "accidental dishcarge of a shotgun" but death by his own hand was obvious.
No motive was assignable for the terrible act, except maybe ill-health. Insane he certainly was not and a more lucid intellect it would be difficulty to find. He had abilities of a very high order, but was a prey to a torpid liver, which seemed always to embitter his existence.

His first nomination was to Siam (Thailand), but before he had taken up his appointment he was transferred to Peking. After a year or two there, finding the climate did not suit him, he obtained a change to Japan.
But even there he was not content with his lot, and preferred annihilation.

He was buried in the Foreigners’ Cemetery of Yokohama.

Er wurde 1871 geboren, besuchte das Wellington College, Berkshire, danach die königliche Militärakademie von Woolwich, und absolvierte eine Stabsausbildung. Danach wurde er zunächst 1900 nach China zur Reiter-Artillerie kommandiert, danach 1901-1902 nach Südafrika und anschließend erfolgte sein Einsatz in der HBM-Gesandtschaft in Tokyo von 1903-1905 als Sprach-Offizier. Während des Russisch-Japanischen Krieges wurde er zur 1. Japanischen Armee für besondere Zwecke abkommandiert, zuerst vom Februar bis March 1904 in Korea, dann vom Mai 1904 bis Juni 1905 in der Mandschurei. Nach seiner Zeit in Japan/ Mandschurei wurde er zur östereich-ungarischen Armee (1906) befohlen, dann 1908 zum Hauptmann des Stabs der Reiter-Artillerie befördert. Er diente 1909 erneut in Übersee, nun als als Ausbilder an der Stabsschule in Quetta, India.
Auf Veranlassung von General Haig wurde er 1910 von diesem Amt entbunden und zu der 6. Inniskilling Dragoons 1911 versetzt, 1914 weiter befördert zum Brevet-Hauptmann. Er diente im 1. WK im Generalstab und wurde zum Hauptmann befördert.
Während der Zeit von 1922-1923 war er Kommandant der Streitkräfte im Irak, dann in Kurdistan, er beendete seinen Dienst 1924. Er wurde 92 Jahre und starb 1963.

EN: Captain. Royal Horse Artillery. British Military Observer of the Russo-Japanese War in 1904-1905. He was born in 1871 and was educated at Wellington College, Berkshire, then at the Royal Military Academy of Woolwich, followed by Staff College from which he joined the Royal Horse Artillery, he first served overseas in China in 1900, then 1901-1902 in South Africa followed by his tour of duty as a Language Officer at the British Legation in Tokyo 1903 - 1905.
During the Russo-Japanese War period he was attached to the Japanese 1st Army in 1904 firstly in Korea on special services during the period February to March 1904, then in Manchuria during the period May 1904 until June 1905.
Following this period in Japan/ Manchuria he was attached to the Austro-Hungarian Army (1906), then promoted to a Staff Captain of the Royal Horse Artillery in 1908 and again serving overseas as an instructor at the Indian Staff College in Quetta, India, during 1909.
He was removed at the instigation of General Haig during 1910. Transferred to the 6th Inniskilling Dragoons in 1911 and further promoted to Brevet Colonel during 1914. He served in the First World War on the General Staff and was promoted to Colonel.
During the period, 1922-1923 he was GOC Military Forces in Iraq, followed by Kurdistan, he retired in 1924. He lived to the age of 92 passing away in 1963.

Im Jahre 1904 zog sich Eliza Ann Vincent aus der Firma zurück und übertrug die Firma an VINCENT, Walter Karl E.. Privat wohnte sie mit ihrem Mann im Konsulat, Yokohama # 155, bis 1882, und zog dann nach # 106 Bluff, wo sie bis 1897 lebten. Im Jahre 1898 zog die Familie nach Yokohama # 30 - 31 Bluff, aber nach dem Tod ihres Mannes wohnte sie in # 119 Bluff zusammen mit ihrer Tochter Elizabeth Lydia Cain.

P. S. Familienquellen und der Grabstein besagen, Eliza starb in Vancouver, und auf der kanadischen Sterbeurkunde sagt ihr Enkel, dass ihre Asche in Yokohama beigesetzt werden soll.
Sie musste Japan mit VINCENT, Walter Karl E. nach Kanada verlassen haben, wo er auch später lebte. E. A. Cain und ihr Mann John William Cain zogen erst 1924 nach Kanada, nach dem Tod von VINCENT, Eliza Ann im Jahr 1922.

In 1892, E. A. Bird merged his haberdasher and drapers company into the E. A. Vincent Establishment and Vincent, Bird & Co., Millinery, Drapery, Dressmaking was established.
Although E. A. Bird suddenly died in 1893, and no descendent of Bird worked in the company, Vincent, Bird & Co. still existed in 1908.
In 1904, Eliza Ann Vincent retired from the company and transferred the company to VINCENT, Walter Karl E.
Privately she resided with her husband in the Consulate # 155 Yokohama until 1882 and then they moved to # 106 Bluff, living there until 1897. In 1898 the family moved to Yokohama # 30 - 31 Bluff but after the death of her husband she lived at # 119 Bluff together with her daughter Elizabeth Lydia Cain.

P. S. Family sources and the gravestone say, Eliza died in Vancouver and on the Canadian death certificate her grandson says that her ashes are to be interred in Yokohama.
She must have left Japan with VINCENT, Walter Karl E. for Canada where he also later lived. E. A. Cain and her husband John William Cain moved to Canada only in 1924 after VINCENT, Eliza Ann death in 1922.

But soon after, in 1881 he joined the business of his mother, E. A. Vincent, Millinery and Drapery Establishment, Yokohama # 85, staying there until 1885.
He left this trade and started to work for Bernard & Wood, Insurance Agency, Yokohama # 27, in 1885.
He joined Strachan & Co., Yokohama # 63 and 71 resp. from 1886 to 1893 and in 1894, he finally joined Findlay, Richardson & Co., Yokohama # 6 where he worked for the years to come.

Von dieser Zeit an schloss er sich der Firma seiner Frau E. A. Vincent an und im Jahre 1904 zog sich das Paar von der Firma zurück und die Firma wurde VINCENT, Walter Karl E. übertragen.
Er starb am 30.10.1907 in Yokohama und wurde auf dem Ausländerfriedhof beigesetzt.

He was born in a village just outside Salisbury, Wiltshire, England. He entered the Royal Army and he was dispatched to Japan where he arrived in 1869 to be engaged as gaoler of the HBM Consular Gaol, Yokohama # 155.

Due to the privilege of “extraterritoriality” that is immunity from Japanese law, each consulate served as court and the consul as judge.
In 1871, Henry James Vincent became additionally Jailor of the Supreme Court of the British Legation, Yokohama Bluff # 212. From 1872 until 1886 he worked as gaoler of the HBM Consulate, Judicial Department, Yokohama # 155 when he was discharged from the Royal Army on his own request.

From this time on he joined the company of his wife E. A. Vincent and in 1904 the couple retired from the company and the ownership was transferred to VINCENT, Walter Karl E..
He died on October 30, 1907 in Yokohama and was buried in the Foreigners´ Cemetery.

DE: Da Siemens 1903 den Elektrohersteller Schuckert übernahm, nutzten sie diese Gelegenheit für eine umfassende Neuordnung der Unternehmensstruktur. Mit der Verschmelzung des ehemaligen Rivalen gründete Siemens die Siemens-Schuckertwerke als spezielle Gesellschaft für den Starkstrombereich, während sich die bestehende Firma Siemens & Halske auf die Schwachstromtechnik spezialisierte. Dank des Aufwärtstrends in Japan wurde die Japan Agency in eine unabhängige Gesellschaft japanischen Rechts als Siemens Schuckert Denki Kabushiki Kaisha (= Siemens Japan) im Jahr 1905 umgewandelt, mit Niederlassungen in Osaka und Moji (Fukuoka-ken) und Kure (Hiroshima-ken) und einer Werkstatt in Kobe für die Reparatur und Herstellung von Geräten und Maschinen. Für die Niederlassungen waren auch entsprechende Spezialisten erforderlich. Ab etwa 1910 wurde Herr Violet in der Filiale Osaka als Elektro-Ingenieur eingesetzt. EN: As Siemens took over the electric manufacturer Schuckert in 1903, it used this occasion for a sweeping reorganization of its corporate structure. On merging with its former rival, Siemens founded the Siemens-Schuckertwerke as special company for the heavy-current field, while the existing company of Siemens & Halske was specialized in weak-current engineering. Thanks to the upward trend in Japan, the Japan Agency was upgraded to an independent corporation under Japanese law as Siemens Schuckert Denki Kabushiki Kaisha (= Siemens Japan) in 1905, with branches in Osaka and Moji (Fukuoka-ken) and Kure (Hiroshima-ken) and a workshop in Kobe for repair and manufacturing of appliances and machines.

Er übersetzte das japanische Bürgerliche Gesetzbuch und das Handelsgesetzbuch in die deutsche Sprache.
1907/ 1908 nahm er an Militärdienst-Übungen in Tsingtao teil und wurde im Ergebnis 1908 zum Leutnant der Reserve befördert.
Im Lauf seiner Tätigkeit entschied er sich gegen eine diplomatische Laufbahn. 1910 wurde er vom japanischen Justizministerium als Rechtsanwalt zugelassen und er gründete in Tokyo mit dem englischen Rechtsanwalt C. N. Crosse und dem australischen Anwalt G. O. Heath die Kanzlei Crosse, Heath & Vogt, tätig bis 1913, danach tätig als selbständiger Rechtsanwalt.
Bei Ausbruch des 1. WK wurde er nach Tsingtao einberufen und kam bereits im November in japanische Kriegsgefangenschaft. Er war Gefangener Nr. 3772, und kam zunächst ins Lager Kumamoto, am 09.06.1915 wurde er nach Kurume verlegt.
Im Dezember 1919 wurde er entlassen, die Heimreise erfolgte auf der Nankai-maru vom 25.03. bis 27.05.1920.
In DE heiratete er am 08.06.1920 Dora Maria verw. Ostwald. Ende 1920 kamen sie nach Japan zurück und ab Februar 1921 führte er seine Kanzlei als Wirtschafts- und Patentanwalt bis zu seinem Tode fort, auch während des 2. WK musste er nicht ausreisen. Sein Haus in Tokyo war eine Begegnungsstätte der Deutschen in Asien. Er starb 1960 in Tokyo, wurde aber von seiner Frau in Deutschland beigesetzt.

EN: He came from a musical parental home and after his graduation from secondary school in 1897 he studied Japanology in Berlin with interpreter examination followed by a study of jurisprudence in Rostock completed with the doctorate. Additionally he was also guest auditor for the theory of composition and he became a good pianist himself.
On October 1, 1901 he started a one-year military service and in 1903 he was posted as lawyer of the German embassy in Tokyo, working for the envoy Count Arco and from 1906 on for the successor Baron Mumm von Schwarzenstein. He translated the Japanese Civil Code and the Code of Commercial Law into the German language.
In 1907/ 1908 he took part in military exercises in Tsingtao with the result of his promotion to second lieutenant of the reserve in 1908.

In the course of his duty in the embassy he decided against a diplomatic career. In 1910 he was authorized as a lawyer by the Japanese Ministry of Justice and in partnership with the English lawyer C. N. Crosse and the Australian advocate G. O. Heath he established the solicitor's office of Crosse, Heath & Vogt which was active until 1913, afterwards he worked as an independent lawyer.
With the outbreak of WWI he was drafted to Tsingtao and already in November 1914 he became a Japanese prisoner. He was prisoner # 3772, at first prisoned in the Camp of Kumamoto but on June 9, 1915 he was shifted to Camp Kurume, staying there until December 1919 when he was released. His return journey to Germany aboard the Nankai-maru took place from 25.03. to 27.05.1920.
On June 8, 1920 he married Dora Maria widowed Ostwald in Germany. At the end of 1920 they came back to Japan and from February 1921 until his death he successfully run his office as business and patent attorney, he even hadn't to leave Japan during WWII.
His house in Tokyo was a venue for meetings of the Germans in Asia. He died in 1960 in Tokyo but was buried by his wife in Germany.

Danach kehrten Hardes und die meisten Angehörigen der niederländischen Mission in ihre Heimat zurück, aber einige blieben, um die technische Leitung während des Betriebs der Fabrik sicherzustellen. Auch wurden die Einrichtungen des Eisenwerks Akunoura für Schiffsreparatur und Schiffbau kontinuierlich erweitert, so dass weitere Spezialisten angefordert wurden. Dazu gehörte auch A. C. J. He had the task to assemble at Akunoura, at the opposite side of Nagasaki bay, a new factory. The plant became famous under "Factory for Steam Engineering"whereas in Japanese it was at first known as the "Akunoura Iron Foundry"(yōtetsusho). The foundry had been ordered some time ago by the daimyō of Saga; some parts had already been shipped from Holland to Japan. Under the supervision of Hardes, the construction of the foundry started on July 19, 1858. The premises at Akunoura comprised some 13,378 m². In 1860, the foundry was enlarged and on June 14, 1861 renamed to "Iron Works"; the factory was completed in 1861. Subsequently, Hardes and most men of the Dutch mission returned home, but some were retained to provide technical guidance in the operation of the plant. Additionally, the facilities of the Akunoura Iron Works were continuously enlarged for ship repair and shipbuilding, thus, further specialists were requested. One of these specialists was A. C. J. Vreedenberg who arrived in Japan in 1865. His contract ran until 1869 and afterwards he left Japan.
After the fall of the shōgunate, the Akunoura plant was taken over by the Meiji government in 1869 and two years later put under the jurisdiction of the newly established Nagasaki prefecture.
